THE EARLY YEARS– Pre Nursery to Reception
At the heart of the GNIS Early Years philosophy is the belief that young children learn best through interactive play and active engagement in their own learning. Learning through play allows young students to develop in all domains (personal, social, emotional, cognitive, and physical) in a manner that promotes problem-solving and adaptation. It also fosters caring responsibility, allows for curiosity, and supports the making of unique real-life connections and the building on prior knowledge. The more young children are exposed to and exercise these skills the better equipped they will be to move on to lower primary.

To enact this philosophy, learning in our Early Years is facilitated through the PYP Units of Inquiry. These allow the children to explore global themes at a level that is developmentally appropriate. Through this experience they have multiple opportunities to develop understandings and skills about language, math, the sciences and humanities, the arts as well as sport and movement. Our primary focus is on providing opportunities for guided and free play, through which teachers can best support student learning that is relevant, significant, engaging and challenging.

The International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP) of Guangzhou Nanhu International School focuses on the total child in a supportive environment. From their first day, your child is encouraged to take part in school life in a self-confident and active manner. Learning, individual and group projects go hand in hand at GNIS.
Our Primary Years Programme (PYP) provides the first part of the internationally recognised educational framework for the elementary school; one being used successfully across the globe. The programme’s emphasis is on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside. The most significant and distinctive feature of this programme are the six trans-disciplinary themes which focus on the following Units of Inquiry:
  • Who we are
  • Where we are in place and time
  • How we express ourselves
  • How the world works
  • How we organise our selves
  • How we share the planet
These “Units of Inquiry” relate to curriculum subjects, Language, Maths, Science, Arts, PE, & Social Studies. The approach to learning is ideal for an international school as it allows students to explore in-depth subjects and relate concepts to the real world. It is an internationally proven way of teaching that enables students to become life-long learners.
